Why retractable instead of a screened-in porch
Permanent screening is a wall you look through every day of the year, including the ones with no bugs. A retractable screen is there only when you want it: lowered at dusk in July, gone on a clear afternoon in May, and rolled up for the winter. The patio keeps its open look, the view isn’t filtered the rest of the time, and there’s no framing to paint.
What actually keeps mosquitoes out
The mesh is the easy part. What decides whether a bug screen works is the edges, because a mosquito doesn’t need to go through the mesh if it can go around it.
- Sealed sides. On a zip-track screen the edges of the fabric run inside the side tracks, so there’s no gap down either side — the same design that keeps the screen steady in wind.
- A bottom that meets the floor. The weighted bar needs to land on a surface without gaps. An uneven slab or a sloped deck leaves a slot underneath, which is why we measure the floor line as carefully as the width.
- A clean top. The housing mounts tight to the beam or ceiling so there’s nothing to fly over.
- A plan for the door. If that side is also your way in and out, use a separate, narrower screen for the doorway, so you raise one screen to walk through instead of the whole wall.

Where retractable bug screens work
- Covered patios — the classic: a roof overhead, screens on the open sides.
- Pergolas — as long as the posts and beams are solid enough to carry the housings and tracks.
- Porches and galleries — a front or back gallery becomes a screened room for the evening.

Bug mesh or sun mesh?
They’re built for different jobs. Bug mesh is made to stop insects and let the air through, and it gives little shade. Sun mesh is rated by openness factor and made to cut heat and glare. Motorized makes it a habit
Mosquitoes are at their worst around dusk, which is exactly when nobody wants to walk around the patio cranking screens down one by one.
