Gatineau

Custom blinds in Gatineau — the Québec side of the river.

Gatineau sits across the river from Ottawa but plays by Québec's rules — different rebate programs, Hydro-Québec's rates, and a city where most people speak French at home. We come to all five sectors, in French or English.

Where we come in Gatineau

All five sectors of the city formed in the 2002 amalgamation — Hull, Aylmer, Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers — with free in-home visits and free installation, and farther for bigger projects.

Why Gatineau isn't just "Ottawa"

Most of what we'd tell someone in Ottawa carries straight across the bridge: the winters are the same, and so are the windows. Three things are different.

Québec's rebates, not Ontario's

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program doesn't apply on this side. Here the programs are Québec's: Rénoclimat pays $150 per rough opening when you replace windows or exterior doors with ENERGY STAR certified models, and Hydro-Québec's LogisVert covers heat pumps, roof insulation done with caulking, and solar panels — but not windows. Neither pays for blinds. The detail is in our Québec rebates guide.

Hydro-Québec's rate structure

Gatineau homes are Hydro-Québec customers, and the standard residential rate charges more for everything above the first 40 kWh a day — which is where winter heating lands. Heat lost through glass is billed at that higher price, so insulating the coldest windows pays back here the same way it does in Montréal. The numbers are laid out in best blinds for winter, and cellular shades are the warmest option.

French first

In the 2021 census, 77% of Gatineau residents said French is the language they speak most often at home. We work fully in French or English, from the first call through the written quote.

Sun off the water in Aylmer

Along the river in Aylmer, homes look south across Lac Deschênes, and open water throws light back up at the windows. That's a glare problem rather than a darkness problem: a solar screen with the right openness factor keeps the view and cuts the brightness. See blinds for south- and west-facing windows, and if the room gets heavy use in summer, exterior screens stop the heat before it reaches the glass.
