The four things that matter
1. Cordless. Always.
Dangling cords and chains are a strangulation hazard for babies and toddlers. Choose cordless (spring) or motorized operation — no loops, nothing to reach. This is non-negotiable in a nursery, and everything we recommend below is cordless.
2. Real darkness, not “dark-ish”
Blackout fabric alone leaks light around the edges — bright bars at 5 a.m. To get truly dark you want a blackout blind running in side channels (or a generous outside mount, ideally with blackout curtains over). Read how to actually get total darkness.
3. Easy to clean
Nurseries get sticky. A blackout roller in a wipe-clean fabric is the practical winner. If the room is cold, a blackout honeycomb adds insulation and quiet — dust it gently.
4. Quiet operation
You will be leaving that room on tiptoe. Cordless springs are silent; good motors are whisper-quiet and let you open the blind slowly on a schedule so mornings are gentle rather than sudden.
Our nursery recommendation
- Blackout roller blind, cordless or motorized, with side channels — the tightest seal, easiest to clean, most economical.
- Blackout honeycomb with channels if the room is cold or noisy — darkness plus insulation and sound dampening.
- Optional: blackout-lined curtains over the top for softness and an extra light seal — mount the track high and wide, and keep them out of reach of a standing toddler.
Choose a light-coloured or patterned face fabric so the room stays cheerful by day. Ask for a bottom seal. And if you’re motorizing, set a “slow open” schedule for wake time — it works surprisingly well.
What to avoid
- Any corded blind or chain within reach.
- Inside-mount blackout with no channels — you’ll get light halos.
- Heavy curtains a toddler can pull down — or mount them securely and high.
Frequently asked questions
Are blackout blinds safe for a nursery?
Yes, when they are cordless (spring) or motorized — no hanging cords or chains. Everything we recommend for nurseries is cordless.
How do I make a nursery completely dark?
A blackout blind running in side channels (with a bottom seal), or an outside mount with generous overlap plus blackout curtains over it. Blackout fabric alone leaks at the edges.
Roller or honeycomb for a baby’s room?
Roller for easiest cleaning and best value; honeycomb if the room is cold or noisy, because it adds insulation and quiet.
Can I set the blind to open at wake time?
Yes — motorized blinds can open slowly on a schedule so mornings are gentle.
Do you install them?
Yes — measured, fitted with channels where needed and installed free across Montreal.
